PRESENTERS' BIOS

Dr. Kathleen Bailey received her M.A. in TESL and her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of California at Los Angeles. She is a professor of Applied Linguistics at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS), where she is the advisor to the Peace Corps Masters International students, who complete a year of graduate school, then teach English for two years in the Peace Corps, before returning to MIIS to finish their masters degrees in TESOL.

Dr. Bailey’s research interests include teacher education, supervision and development; language assessment; classroom research; innovation processes; the teaching of speaking; and research methodology. She has been honored as a recipient of the James E. Alatis Award for service to TESOL and the Heinle Lifetime Achievement Award, and is a two-time recipient of the Allen Griffin Award for Excellence in Teaching in Monterey County. She also received the Leslie Eliason Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Monterey Institute.

From 1998-1999, Dr. Bailey was the president of the international TESOL association. She served a total of seven years on the TESOL Board of Directors. She is the President and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TIRF – The International Research Foundation for English Language Education, as well as President of the Foundation – offices she has held since September, 2009. In 2014 she was elected as an officer of the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL). She is currently the First Vice President and the Chairman of the 2016 AAAL national conference.

 

 

 

 

 

Peter Shaw has been a language teacher and language teacher educator for over 40 years. After working in various parts of Europe and Africa, and in Mexico, he settled in California where he currently designs and facilitates courses in pedagogy, curriculum design and professional development at the Institute of International Studies in Monterey.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Shuhan C. Wang (王周淑涵) received her BA in Foreign Languages and Literatures from National Taiwan University, an MA in Communication from Ohio State University, and a second MA in Bilingualism/TESOL from University of Delaware. She received her PhD in Educational Linguistics from University of Pennsylvania. She is the President of ELE Consulting International, LLC, in which she provides technical assistance, teacher professional development, curriculum and material development, and program evaluation to parties interested in language education. She is also the Project Director of the Chinese Early Language and Immersion Network (CELIN) at the Asia Society. 

Dr. Wang has held a variety of prominent positions in language education, including as former Deputy Director of the National Foreign Language Center (NFLC) at the University of Maryland and as Co-Principal Investigator of the STARTALK Project. She also served as the Executive Director for Chinese Language Initiatives at the Asia Society, and as the Education Associate for World Languages and International Education for the Delaware Department of Education. Since 2012, she has served as an advisor to the Ministry of Education in Singapore on the Mother Tongue and Chinese Primary Curriculum Projects, and on the Sesame Workshop Mandarin Project. Working with numerous international schools and with many state governments, Dr. Wang has helped build the North Carolina Online Mandarin Program, the Maryland Elementary World Language-STEM Curricular Modules and Elementary Language Teacher Development, and the Delaware Chinese Dual Language Immersion Programs. She has co-authored several textbooks, including a high school Chinese textbook and Flying with Chinese, a series for K-6 learners, and her work has been published in books and peer-reviewed journals.
